A detailed brass Victorian brooch styled to resemble a note or letter that may arrive through the post from a loved one. The face of the brooch features a beautifully enamelled swallow bird.

Curator’s Note:

Swallows were a popular symbol during the Victorian era, representing a message of love or friendship. Swallow motifs, such as the one enamelled onto this brooch, symbolised safe return, loyalty and enduring love and friendship. The symbol was particularly present in love tokens given to or by sailors as they set sail on long journeys. This traditional endured throughout the early part of the 20th century.

Size and weight: 3.4cm by 2.5cm, 8.2 grams

Condition: Excellent - original pin and c clasp and no damage to the enamelling
