An unusual pair of foiled amethyst pastes set into traditional Georgian closed-back collet settings crafted in 9ct rose gold, with 9ct gold wires.
Georgian earrings of this style and quality are difficult to come by and this pear/drop shape is less common than a simple round-cut faceted paste.
Curator’s note
Georgian settings such as this collet or ‘pie-crust’ setting offered a simple and rather naive way to set a paste stone by hand with the simple tools of the day. Paste or glass stones were often backed with coloured reflective ‘foil’ to add depth and extra colour to faceted glass. Foil-back Georgian pieces are highly regarded, rare and very collectable in their own right - especially when paired with precious metals and this classically Georgian stone-setting technique.
Details
