An incredible, curious wearable artefact in the form of a very early solid silver hand-made bottle/pot in the shape of a trussed hog. The bottle has a very secure and solid loop on the snout, allowing it to be worn on a chain.
This curious and special piece of folk art/jewellery features motifs that resemble fried eggs, and has a ‘lid’, that’s decorated with scalloped designs. The lid can be removed and there is a section of handmade foxtail chain attached.
An intriguing, early example of naive silversmithing. This remarkable object could be English or possible German.
Date: Early Georgian Circa 1780
Hallmarks: No hallmarks, but tests as silver
Size: 82mm in length
22mm in width
27 grams
Condition: In very good antique condition - the small section of chain has a broken link at the end, but this isn’t necessary to use, as the hog has a large loop in its snout, which can be used as a bail.
