This is a beautiful example of the kind of Japanese crafts that were being produced for the export market in the 19th century. Before the mid 1800s, Japan was an isolated country, but the Meiji period brought with it rapid modernisation and Japan began to position itself as a major player on the world stage. Western buyers were eager to buy up Japanese crafts and art forms like this brooch.
