Rare Votes for Women Suffragette Hand-Etched Pendant
A hand-etched activist pendant made in 1917 by a member of the Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU) to be worn during activism that led to women being granted the vote shortly after. The pendant is made from Bakelite or a similar early form of plastic. The etching appears to be have been done with a hot tool.
The front reads 1917 Votes for Women and the back reads WSPU and features an attractively etched rose, which was the symbol of the WSPU.
Curator’s notes:
This pendant was found among a collection of Suffragette memorabilia in a house clearance in the 1960s. Shortly afterwards it was displayed at Taggs Island Museum and Hampton Court and later at Syon Park Museum.
